First Aid Treatment for a Neck or Back Injury (Victim Is Awake)

If the victim is awake, then you should:

1. Call EMS.

2. Keep the victim supported in the position found; avoid any movement of the head, neck, or back.

3. Kneel or lie down above the victim’s head and place your hands on both sides of his head to keep the neck still; do not attempt to realign the neck.

4. If available, place rolled-up blankets or towels on either side of the head to minimize movement of the neck.

5. Monitor vital signs and level of consciousness until EMS arrives.

Support a victim’s neck by holding the head in the position found.
